IB Diploma Programme
The IB Diploma Programme is an internationally recognised and highly respected two-year upper secondary programme for students aged 16 to 19 who wish to pursue higher education. It is offered in approximately 4,500 schools across 150 countries.
The programme
At the heart of the programme is the IB Learner Profile, a set of ten attributes that aims to develop internationally minded students. These attributes include being inquiring, knowledgeable, open-minded, caring, principled, and reflective. Together, they help students learn to think critically, act responsibly, and contribute positively to the world.
Structure of the programme
The IB Diploma Programme consists of six subjects chosen from up to six subject groups: Studies in Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, and the Arts. In addition, all students complete the three core elements: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS).
The breadth of the programme makes it academically demanding and well suited to preparation for university study. At the same time, students have considerable flexibility in shaping their own programme, as they may choose subjects that match both their interests and their future academic plans.
Levels & subject choices
Levels
Students normally choose three subjects at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). In special cases, a student may take four Higher Level subjects, although this is not the usual route. Higher Level subjects involve 240 teaching hours, while Standard Level subjects involve 150. As a result, Higher Level courses are studied in greater depth and breadth. All students must also complete the three compulsory core elements: TOK, CAS, and the EE.
Subject choices
Most subjects are offered at both Standard Level and Higher Level, although some are available at only one level. Students must choose one subject from each of the six groups. A group 2 subject may be replaced by a second Group 1 subject. Similarly, a Group 6 subject may be replaced by an additional subject from Groups 1 to 4. Students who study two languages from group 1 will earn a bilingual diploma.
